About Team Riley

Riley Kim was diagnosed with stage IV alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma July 29, 2014, the summer after he graduated from 5th grade and 2 weeks before he was due to start a science and technology middle school. He spent the summer excited about his upcoming middle school adventure.  He spent the 14 months after diagnosis getting chemotherapy and 28 days of radiation which caused 3rd degree burns to 1/3 of his back and all the organs and tissue inside of his body.  He is currently NED - no evidence of disease. We are grateful but still scared. The treatment was very hard and Riley is learning to eat and walk again still 7 months after the last chemo.  But our fear isn't about the hard road of recovery.  In spite of the tremendous hurdle he has leaped that too many kids don't, I fear is that he has a better than 90% chance of relapse and if he relapses there no known successful treatment for that relapse.
